This just shows that banks are still in the dark ages.

When I first opened a bank account way back in the 1960s cheques always cleared in 3 days. I find it laughable that now it takes 6 or sometimes more. We are in the 21st century!!

    I also bank at Natwest.

I think if you are using a cheque then you also are in the dark ages, In my day Faster payments cleared instantly We are in the 21st Century.

Unfortunately cheques can still bounce until the 6th day as relies post etc. but bank will most times let you have some access to funds much earlier and will show as cleared balance on 3rd day in most cases.

As I have said in another post my husband went to get some Euros from HSBC and they said he could not pay by debit card and they would only accept cash or cheque!!

Now that really is the dark ages.

If you're a customer we can debit the account directly - you never mentioned if your husband was an HSBC (not First Direct - for forex they have to be treated as a seperate bank) customer, as if not that may explain their reluctance.

He is a First Direct customer so I agree it is a different bank, but I was still amazed that they would accept a cheque which takes days to clear and could bounce as the amount he wanted was over his cheque guarantee limit and they would not accept a debit card.

i paid a checque into my account from my parents - they bank at the same bank and branch as me and it still took 6 working days to clear!

Did you pay it in at said branch? if it was natwest then would be showing cleared next working day.

When I had a Step account, I paid a cheque in from my mum drawn on a Yorkshire Bank Current Account. It went in on Monday afternoon, funds were available Wednesday morning. Maybe this has changed? I remarked to the cashier how fast it was.
