Getting Processor up to speed!

I'll be building my dad a new computer tomorrow as i've built several in the past. As i need to build it within a few hours and no problems hopefully arising i need to have all possible problems out of the way
One problem i have had in the past is the CPU speed, where once windows is installed i'd check system information and it would report that the CPU is running at 1.1 ghz where its a 2.5ghz. I fixed it last time after like 5 hours by fiddling with bios but if the same problem occurs again i need it sorting fast.
Where in bios would you fix such a problem and is it a common problem?
Thanks

It will come under FSB, or front side bus. It can be set at different speeds so you can overclock the processor, or in your case, underclock it.
Take a note of the numbers next to the BIOS entry for FSB incase it happens again.0 -
Control Panel, Power Option, then change to either 'Always On' or 'Desktop' I think..... then go back and check your system information0

I dont know, but there was an article about it in PC Mag a few months back..... heres some more info on it, it works not only on laptops but desktops as well, depending if your processor can do it or not. Seems a bit easier to try first, rather than messing around in the BIOS....

No, it shouldn't be a common problem. The BIOS should detect everything for you, and I'd be careful before playing with fsb speeds and voltages. Update the BIOS version on the motherboard first, and also check any forums.
What type of cpu was this?
Remember if it's an AMD they work via a performance value and not a clock speed value like Intel."Boonowa tweepi, ha, ha."0 -
ok first thign first,
what mobo and what cpu do you have
then we can tell you what settings u need, your probly need to bump on fsbWannabe DFW NERD: Not fully fledged member yet !

The CPU multiplier should be picked up as auto in BIOS. The only setting you will need to touch is the FSB.
Its prolly defaulted at 100Mhz or 133Mhz......you may need to use 166Mhz or even 200Mhz if its fast.
You should be able to tell what FSB you need from the type of RAM you bought (if u bought any). Most systems are built to run with the FSB and RAM frequency set in-sync.
ie. I have a AMD Athlon 2800+ (runs at 2.09Ghz stock speed), the CPU muliplier is 12.5x and the FSB is 166Mhz.
So, 166 x 12.5 = 2.075Ghz.0 -
Do you have 'cool n quiet' enabled? That'll almost certainly be what it is if you do.0

the computer that i did have this problem with was a AMD athlon, my dads new computer will be an amd athlon64 though the mobo i'm not quite sure as of yet...
Wanted to check whether this problem was common and as its not i'm not too worried but if this does occur i will def report the details here as you lot seem to know your stuff and well... put me to shame :think:0
