Getting rid of old Vinyl Records

We've been going through our old vinyl collection, replacing any we still want with digital downloads. This means we've now got quite a lot we no longer need.

What's the best way of getting rid of / selling these? I don't really fancy eBay as I'm sure the packing of them safely enough to avoid damage will probably cost more than they're worth. Does anyone know any dealers in the London / Essex area?

Any sensible ideas would be gratefully received, otherwise I think they'll be slowly disposed of in the general rubbish, which would be a bit of a shame.

Also, other than looking at completed ebay auctions, are there any web sites which list the value of old records?

Thanks.

Do you have that thick yellow book full of phone numbers? You could try looking in there for dealers within that area.

Whatever you do, don't throw them away! At the very least you can give them to a local charity shop.

Unless they are rare, I wouldn't fancy your chances. My local dump (sorry, Household Waste Recycling Centre) has a container full of them.

I've had some listed on Amazon (which you could try) for ages with no interest. If run of the mill, then the charity shops might be your best bet, or try listing on eBay as a lot with collection only.

If you do look to sell, remember that collectors are very particular about the condition, etc.

Collecting vinyl (4,000 albums and singles) is a bit an [STRIKE]obsession[/STRIKE] hobby of mine ditto all above.

charity shops aint daft no more and I've seen such shops refuse damaged/unplayable vinyl. I even saw a couple (patronising I know) 'old dears' browsing through a copy of Record Collector to price them. Oxfam in particular runs a few shops as a record shop.

Best thing is to sort by genre, punk/post-punk remains very collectable as does ska/reggae/dub,that is to say you wont have a problem selling them but I dont know what you'll expect to get for them.

The majority of 70's rock/metal doesn't really shift.

I remember when I got rid of mine, I swapped them for CD's at a second hand record shop. You get very little for them, maybe 1 CD for every 20 LP's, but it's better than throwing them away!

As per Olias, I took a few of mine to a couple of second hand record shops but they don't give you much in the way of cash.

I wouldn't have known if any of mine were worth anything or not anyway so it could've been that the dealer was looking through my offerings thinking 'great, that's a rare one, I could sell that on for an almighty profit' whilst saying to me 'well, love, there's not a lot here really but I'll give you a fiver for this one just so that you don't leave empty handed', (unlikely!), so, if you do go down that route, it's worth knowing if you've got any valuable ones beforehand.

I thought about Ebay but I'm not very good at checking the condition of the records so imagined I'd get some disgruntled people coming back to me if I hadn't spotted a scratch (or three!) before selling.

The only other thing i can think of is a car boot sale. I've done these in the past and have noted that when you're setting up at 7am in the morning you get people coming round asking for the same things - records/fishing gear/mobile phones/perfume. Has anyone else noticed this?

This is true. I listed a Status Quo "From The Makers Of..." limited edition box set in circular metal tin, everything completely mint, kept in attic since 1982. Went for under a tenner :(

  • For some really bizarre reason when I was a kid I was told to do this with old vinyl: http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1212/644691063_995935c97d.jpg
