Paying for shopping in Calais

I am thinking of going on a day trip to Calais to buy food and drink and want to know what would be the best way to pay for my shopping. Should I pay sterling? Use my Nationwide credit card and, if I do, should I pay in sterling or euros?

Use your Nationwide credit card for purchases & if you need some cash also use your Nationwide debit card at a cashpont.
You'll get the same great exchange rate for both cards.
The rate should be a few % better than you can get anywhere else.

The real point is you should pay in Euros. If you do so, Nationwide will convert at the commercial rate and charge you no commission. The same applies if you use an ATM, which may also offer you the choice.

If you let shops or overseas banks convert to sterling for you, you are stuck with their rate, which will be less favourable to you, and may also get charged commission to change.

If you are paying by credit card some shops ask to see your passport so make sure you have it on you.
