Opinions - Is it bad luck to wear red?

My wedding dress is going to white.. but as I am thinking of having a 50's style tea length dress, I was thinking of having red shoes.. and big red bow around the centre of my dress.

I have been told however that it is bad luck to wear red on your wedding day.. I think it all comes from an old rhyme (however, I'm not 100% on that), but what are your opinions? Is it bad luck, or is it nothing to worry about? Would it bother other people if I was to wear red?

I'm really unsure about this, and anyones opinion would be greatly appreciated! :)

I don't think that you should worry about that at all. I think nowadays its less about tradition and more about what the brode and groom really want. If you want to wear red accesoried on your wedding day then go for it! I have never heard about a red dress being bad luck and the fact that they make red wedding dresses means it is not that taboo!!!

I think your bridal wear sounds fab and really different! You will be making a statement and I really don't think you should worry about any superstitions that you may have heard of. I suppose its like when people were told that you shouldn't wear white if you weren't a virgin on your wedding day!!!

    Don't worry!

  • Here's that poem but remember it is old!

“Married in white, you will have chosen all right.
Married in grey , you will go far away.
Married in black, you will wish yourself back.
Married in red, you’ll wish yourself dead.
Married in blue, you will always be true.
Married in pearl, you’ll live in a whirl.
Married in green, ashamed to be seen,
Married in yellow, ashamed of the fellow.
Married in brown, you’ll live out of town.
Married in pink, your spirits will sink.”

As previously said I think you should go with what you want. I know a lot of brides that have wore red and I think it looks beautiful!!!
  • Well, my nan always said "red shoes, no knickers" but I really dont think it matters! I had a fuchsia pink band around my dress, and wore fuchsia shoes ( although my dress was full length, I had the alterations done so that when I walked, they peeked out)
Anyway, my dad heard about it and thought it wasn't right, but when he saw me in it he cried. So I (after all my rambling) think it's great - GO FOR IT!!!
  • I've never heard of red being bad luck either. I had a similar dress, but with a gigantic jade bow made here: http://www.candyanthony.com/index.htm Candy was absolutely fantastic, much better than any of the other impersonal bridal shops I visited.

lol, interesting concept: the colour you wear will determine your fate, but only if it rhymes!

Thanks, you've all made me feel much better about the situation.. I know there must be lots of people that have worn red dress, or other colours, and when it comes down to it, I guess it really can't make that much of a difference!

Little Chicken - I love the Candy Anthony dresses.. exactly what I want, but not sure my budget will stretch that far! :(

If you look in the 'album' section there are a few people with red sashes, and accessories. They might give you inspiration. Looking at them all makes me want another dress. :o:o:o

I think someone somewhere will have some superstition about your wedding and I am sure if it was widely thought to be unlucky I don't think they would make so many red wedding dresses!
  • Theres loads of coloured dresses about now and especially red so I am sure you have no need to worry about red accessories. In India and China the traditional bridal colour is red and the red is considered to bring good good luck, happiness and prosperity.
You will look fantastic,I think the red with the shorter dress is gorgeous.Love the 50,s style.
