    Just remember that using these devices to play downloaded game files is illegal! ....so no links to download sites etc etc
    Nintendo have said the cards themselves are illegal as well.

    These cards are not illegal, Nintendo have probably said this as a scare tactic. There is nothing in English Law that make these cards illegal and you will not break any laws buying one. However once yopu put a pirated game on them this is a different kettle of fish and at this popint the cards become illegal as well as the copyright laws for the game pirated come into place.
  • Agree with the above.

    The cards are 'officially' meant to be used for playing Homebrew games (Uncopyrighted, home-made games, which are available to download), and turn the DS into a Media Player. The web sites that sell the cards make no mention of using them for pirated content, and even stress that using them for that purpose is not advised.

    Even DATEL, a respectable electronics manufacturer, released such a card in the UK called 'Games n' Music', which came with a disc containing 25 Homebrew games.

    Similar to a blank DVD, I suppose. On its own, its totally legit. Burn a movie onto it: its an illegal pirate.
    Profit=sanity
    Turnover=vanity
    Greed=inhumanity:dance:

    It bypasses Nintendo's firmware, loading up their own, without nintendo's consent.
    Of course it could well have been a scare tactic.
  • I like to look at these as Media Enhancers, allowing you to view and play media files with the added benifit of playing homebrew. :j

    I personally think the biggest advantage of these cards is not having to change cards for each game. If you have small children, or as I have, a special needs child, they are great for backing up their existing games onto one card. They never need to remove the card so no more searching for lost games and ideal for holidays/school trips etc! Possibly still not strictly legal but, for those of you with a conscience about downloading free games, I am sure no-one could object if you have already bought the game! Generally speaking, allowing space for saving games, a 1gb micro sd will hold about 15 games and a 2gb 30. They are an absolute godsend, I paid just under £8 with a 2gb micro sd from dealextreme, took about 2 weeks to arrive but at least if it gets lost we still have the original games!

    Looks like a great recommendation next junkie. What are the benefits of using AKAIO firmware rather than the firmware that AceKard provides on their website?

    Cheers
  • The AK-AIO is developed (by approval from acekard) by a independant team of firmware developers, they do it cos they love it and that shows in the features of the firmware, the menu layout is alot better and feature rich, but for me i wanted the faster multi -loader load times that this offered as opposed to the original firmware.

    (i must say that my other half is the next junkie! Ha Ha)

    Same here, no more having to switch and find cartridges- as well as taking them everywhere with you!

    It sounds like a bit of a grey area as to whether the R4 is illegal or not. I have a few spare and was hoping to sell them on a car boot at the weekend, will I be OK selling them there? as I don't want to get into trouble! :)
