catalogue charges - Kays

For christmas I purchased a chest of drawers through Kays catalogue, the item arrived with a missing drawer, so I telephoned customer service dept. Unable to get through on the most ridiculous automated phone system I have ever come across, I emailed. I did not receive a response until after the new year, when they set me another set of drawers

I therefore returned the old one, but a few days later I received an invoice for two sets of drawers, also including a fee for late payment!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I subsequently emailed and said item returned, happy to pay when I get an account for the right amount, less any late payment charge. I have not received a reply to this email, but have now received another bill (now for one set of drawers) with additional late payment charges and a threat of court action if I do not pay.

I telephoned yesterday after work and spoke to someone in the credit recovery department, who was not interested in what I had to say, other than if I did not make a payment Kays would take action against me. And that I should not have emailed, but phoned.

What is concerning me is that the late payment charges are almost 50% of the original item. . It is so easy to see how individuals fall quickly into debt. Surely though catalogues charges must be regulated by some authority body, they seem to be worse that the banks.

    hi treetops,

i don't know if this will help, but I had major problems with Kays in the past, and the only thing that worked was threatening them with the police / legal action for stealing my money (i made a payment that got lost, and whilst I was waiting for them to sort it out they whacked me with a load of charges).

My money mysteriously reappeared, and all the charges were removed (btw, I never even reported them, the threat on it's own worked).

I know your circumstances are slightly different, but it might be worth a shot, esp. since they are in the wrong in the first place?

Also try www.saynoto0870.com - they have lists of phone numbers for Kays, and you can get through to a real human being (for what it's worth:rolleyes: )

Good luck, and keep on at them, it's worth it in the end up!
