Making a raised bed - with no tools. Possible?

Hi all,

Is there an easy way to make a raised bed with v. limited carpentry skills & tools? I have screwdrivers and that's about it. Can you use plastic boxes (for under bed storage) to grow plants?

I'm hoping to get a bed around 4 - 6 ft x 3 ft x 12".

I don't use any fixings. Only tool a hammer.Not all my plot is given to raised beds and as each year I need to be able to move the beds around.

I just hammer a few battons of wood every so often on the outside and the weight of the soil pushes it tight from the other side. On my site most of use build them this way. Most build them out of pallet wood or some buy gravel boards from DIY stores at about £3.50 each for 2.8metre lengths.

The guy next to me as raised beds made in this way which are on their 7th year

Thanks for your reply. I would be placing this bed on a concrete surface, so I don't think that would work for me. I can buy beds from ebay for about £30 each, but would really like to make them for a lot less than that.

Are there any crates or something that are easy to come by which would be the same dimensions?

ETA : it doesn't have to look lovely, just to work

Well then just screw thew batons inside each corner.

Just make sure what ever storage boxes you use you drill holes in the bottom.

I grow in empty fish boxes(collect these from the skip outside the garden centre) deep underbed storage would be fine, basically anything like toy storage boxes. Those large cans, the big baked bean cans are great for herbs. 79 free florist black bins /pots, builders buckets and the plastic milk bottles by just cutting the top section off.
