How to Turn on Panasonic Cordless Phone

I have a Panasonic KX-TGA710E phone. I can't seem to switch it on. It was working before. I took the batteries out, because the charger was unplugged for a while. Now, with charger and batteries restored, it won't turn on. I have searched the internet for manuals, but they don't tell you how to turn the handset on. I am just charging up a new set of batteries, in case that's the problem.
Anybody got any ideas?

i've got a panasonic cordless phone but a different model to you, to turn this one on you have to press the 'phone/power off' button (the button with a symbol of a red phone with a line through it on the right hand side!) for about 1 second - to turn it off you press the same button for 2 seconds.0

I think I'm getting somewhere. It's supposed to turn on as soon as you put batteries in, but I've got a bad contact or a loose connection somewhere.
It's bleeping a lot at the moment, but at least I've got signs of life.
