It will help if you can the make amd model of the drive but look at the Logo's on it.

If it has a RW ins a square ish box it supports DVD +R

If it has the Logo "DVD" over a disk witn RW below it it supports DVD-R

Take a look at this drive fascai from Amazon
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/images/B000Y3O6RG/sr=8-6/qid=1235417310/ref=dp_image_text_0?ie=UTF8&n=560798&s=electronics&qid=1235417310&sr=8-6

The two logos on the left are Lightscribre which lets you burn images on a special disc without a label (don';t bother it's not worth it!), and Writemaster which is a samsung trademark.

The next logo is the DVD -R format, it says multi below it as it can probably do -R -RW and -ROM and Dual layer

Next is the DVD +R logo, the stylised RW in a box, again with comments below probably +R, +RW and Dual Layer

And last on the Right is the CD Recordable logo.
