Im afraid how long a washing machines lasts depends a lot on luck and how much you use it. You should just buy the most economic model in your price range, with the load capacity that suits you.

If you buy online you must use a credit card, if you dont have one give the money to a friend who does, who can order for you. Then if the goods dont turn up, the CC provider is jointly liable with the company you have bought off and will have to refund you.

    jimexbox,

what do you think about the LGs? which is the better one?

what would your recommendation be between the 2 LGs and the hotpoint aquarius wml560g?

I bought the Hotpoint Aquarius about a year after my father bought one. It's still going 5 years later. I can honestly say that it doesn't seem to wash as well as my old one which was an ancient Zanussi (lasted 15 years) but it's ok and we wash at least once every day.

Should say that my Father still has his and it's still going well.

What about a John Lewis washing machine. They were offering 3 year guarantees.

TBH any electical item will break down mostly likely at two points. When you first switch it on and when it reaches the end of its design life, they call it the bathtub curve for obvious reasons. It starts out high reaches a low in the middle, then rises again. That's why I never ever buy an extended warranty, or buy a product because of an offer of an extended warranty.

Buying a product which will reach the end of its design life, then die, is the key. If a product breaks down immediately, its covered by the manufacturer. The vast majority of washing machines will be trouble free for the first few years, unless you buy a Miele with a 10yr guarantee, a lot of it down to pure luck.

Medium term guarantees, especially ones pushed out by retailers for a fee are a money making scam.

After buying several Beko products, I must admit that I do buy John Lewis because of the guarantee.

I wish they sold Pc's. My brand new acer (size of a hard back book) broke down after 13 months, dishwasher, tumble dryer. I have learnt a bit of a lesson which is go for the long guarantee. I NEVER buy extended warranties.
  • Thank you all very much for the info and input, I appreciate it very much.

I've thought about it some more and think I'll be going for the Hotpoint WMD960P from Hughes Direct for £317 incl. delivery.
It's rated as having Wash A/ Energy A/ Spin A.
(would appreciate it if you let me know of any cheaper places to buy it, or if you think I'm making a mistake buying this particular machine)
Although John Lewis do a 2 year guarantee with this model, it costs £391 there.

When I asked if the machine would last 5/6 years, I meant whether the machine/manufacturer was known for bad build/design quality.

And I agree with jimexbox about extended warranties, in most cases they are a scam. Just found out a family member bought an LG about a year ago for £350 from currys (sale/ £100 off) with a manufacturers 10 year guarantee. It's a shame they're not doing that deal anymore.

And to update on the status of my current washing machine (Hotpoint WMA46) I think it has finally died. I put a load in today, and at the end the drum wouldn't spin anymore and making a loud grinding noise. My guess, and it's just a guess, the motor could've been killed by that brown liguid I saw on it.
  • Update.

Ordered Hotpoint WMD960G from electricals123.com for £301.07 (+£9.99 for saturday delivery). They do free delivery for weekdays.

Should arrive 28/02, will update on how things go.
