Mail shots: any one have any experience buying or selling this way?

When we were living in London we used to receive many letters exressing interest to buy either from potential purchasors directly or via agents.
I was wondering if anyone here had found their dream house or a buyer as a result of one of these mail shots.

We got a buyer from a note put through our door.
Had a buyer who pulled out, I had kept a note put through the door a few weeks previous; one text message, two telephone calls and a viewing that day and 2 days later = replacement buyer.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. Don't believe everything that's written on them, figures are sometimes exaggerated to get your business from agents. Potential purchasers, maybe, but if it's a mailshot it's likely to be one of those companies who will offer a very low amount for the house and even then try and gazunder before exchange. I'd be very wary!Scar tissue that I wish you saw, sarcastic mister know it all, close your eyes and I'll kiss you cause with the birds I'll share this lonely view.0

So they CAN work!
I'm thinking of sending out a letter starting with a street we wanted to buy in a few years ago.

In this market you may find a seller put off from putting their property for sale with an agent because of the hassle it will involve and the thought of friends asking them every week if they have a buyer etc.
I would go for it, nothing to lose.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. Interesting question... I would consider doing the same when we next come to buy...
We have had letters/notes from both people and agents through our door (although not in the past year or so, unfortunately! ).
If you would do it, what would you put on the note? I would be very weary about mentioning money, since what we would actually pay would depend very much on the state of the actual houses on viewing ... Any thoughts?
