Door too small for Frame?

Hi guys

Quick and possibly silly question.

Before we had our bathroom redone we used to have a folding plastic door which we hated so decided to get a new solid door. Measured it up and its approx 30" wide so bought a 78 x 30" door from B&Q (one of their cheapy broadland doors).

Got it home, stood it up against the door and noticed that it is leaving a gap at the top right about 3 or 4 mm. (As nothing in our house is straight this doesn't surprise me and the bottom overlaps the frame as well).

As there was no door there before there is nothing for the door to close against so once the wood for this is in and with a small gap for the hinges (opening/closing etc) do you think a gap of say 2mm maybe 3mm on the closing side will look stupid? - I can always whack on another coat of paint too ;)

Don't really want the hassle of taking the door back for a 33" wide one and heard you can't lop more than 30mm off each side?

Your thoughts please :)

A gap of 2-3mm is pretty small.
A couple of coats of think gloss paint and it will be gone (assuming you are paiting the door).
Anyway teher is normally a gap of a few mm around the door to allow for expansion and contraction. And believe me the dorr will be different in size won'ts its been inside your house for a few days,
  • I guess it could be 5mm tops but like you said two coats of paint should be ok.
  • should be fine ,if not take the architrave off the lock side and try wedging it over slightly
if you think peoples advice is helpfull please take the time to clicking the thank you button it gives great satisfaction

Sounds alright...remember over the years it'll probably be painted a few times and each time adding extra thickness! If you want to even out the gap you could use a wood plane to plane some off in appropriate places. Pieces of cardboard behind hinges work wonders too for a bit of extra padding in the right places (thin cardboard from cereal packets works best!).

None of our doors are square/upright either!

Small point...but it's easier to fix the door stays (timber around the frame to prevent door opening wrong way) after the door....especially if things are out of square.
