Well, there is a bit more than a day's worth of sightseeing in Malaga - the climb up to the castle and a walk round it will easily take up half a day.

I always use tripadvisor to check on any hotels we like the look of - the higher the rating the better for any particular town.

we went to Rincon de la Victoria last Christmas - lovely place, nice long promenade along the beach etc. but only about 5 or 10km from Malaga - on the East side.

    Back on track. :D
Hotelopia via Quidco (10%) and also using a discount code (often 10% codes are available) may be an option. They normally are pretty cheap/ish with both discounts.

    Good luck,

  • Three or four days in Malaga is probably enough, but you can get about on the Train or Bus to spread the time.

Trains will take you anywhere in Spain from the RENFE station
Local train will get you to Fuengirola and Torremolinas, and points in between. These are OK out of season, but not to my taste in Summer.
    We do enjoy Benalmadena Costa.

You can walk for miles from Malaga to the East , to Rincon de la Victoria, which is a very Spanish Resort, I guess what Torremolinos and Fuengirola used to be like.

    We've stayed here:

twice and it's very well positioned and was reasonably priced at New Year

Stayed here several times at Benalmadena:

generally outside school holidays (because we can!)
Reasonable price with a super buffet breakfast - though not impressed with the other meals.

    Things to do in Malaga:

    Picasso museum
    Gibralfaro (the castle)
    Alcazabar
    Shopping

Don't bother with the modern art museum,There was a Tracy Emin exhibition at New Year - PANTS!

Try any Tapas bar, Specialli Gorki and Ajo Blanco.

Thanks to you all for these tips. I've clicked on thanks!
I will pass on these recc's and comments. I've personally spent a lovely week in Malaga City and enjoyed it. Busy city which has been much improved in recent years. Beach is ok too and a great fish restaurant on the beach to the north - really busy and reasonable prices too.
