Omelette451 - Can i ask where you found the fares for £14? I'm looking to go down to London from Manchester on the 12th March and all the fares i find seem to be £54 - eek!

You can't be looking very hard, can you?!

The example date I used is Wed 18 March MAN-SSD; plenty available for £14 o/w.

On the 12th it's a bit more expensive, but there's still a choice of options at £28 o/w, going down to £22 in the afternoon. I don't know where you were looking but I suggest you try the nxec booking site, which makes comparing journeys very simple indeed. hth

Those with plenty of time to spare or who have plenty of luggage and want to avoid the tube could consider going via Peterborough or Ely. If you use a split ticket (split at Ely for single journeys, Peterborough for a return trip) it's cheeper than £60 and can sometimes be cheeper than going via London. You can get single tickets from Manchester to Peterborough or Ely for £14 or £16 and a return from Peterborugh to Stansted for £18.80.
  • There is no direct train from Manchester to Cambridge. There is one to Norwich that offers a connection at Peterborough to Stansted but the whole journey takes just over five hours and costs £60. The route through London costs from £14 and takes three-and-a-half hours. Not much of a contest in my opinion.

Well actually it depends on whether the person concerned can be faffed going via London.

    Hi,

I do the trip quite often as my parents live in the south of France and the only direct flight goes from Stansted.

The easiest way is by train via Peterborough, but it takes time, and on Sundays it's a nightmare!

The cheapest way, is to get a cheap train or bus in advance to London and then take the easybus from London Victoria to Stansted.

    Good luck with it!

Are you using the print-at-home dirt cheap tickets then? I ask because in my experience the fare to Stansted using normal VT advance tickets is usually only a pound or two above the advance fare just to London, and if it's changed I'm going to start having to be more careful...
  • Piece of cake for about £20 - £30 with accommodation (if that is spelt right).......I think, depending on ya flight times ya needing for Stansted...
Drive or somehow get to Liverpool airport depending on your return journey...

    AIRPORTS using RYANAIR

    Liverpool TO Dublin

    Depart: Liverpool 06:55 Arrive: Dublin 07:45 1 x Adult 2.00 GBP (0 tax fees)

Depart: Dublin 08:10 Arrive: London Stansted 09:25 (pushing it but they tend to land early) Fare: 2.00 EUR Taxes / Fees:10.00 EUR Total Price: 12.00 EUR

    or

Depart: Dublin 11:30 Arrive: London Stansted 12:45 1 x Adult 2.00 EUR Taxes / Fees:10.00 EUR Total Price: 12.00 EUR

    RETURN

    STANSTED TO DUBLIN

    Mon, 20 Apr 09 Depart STANSTED 19:35 Arrive DUBLIN 20:50 2.00 EUR
    Mon, 20 Apr 09 Depart DUBLIN 22:50 Arrive LIVERPOOL 23:35 £3.79

    About £20 in total
Prob not in line with your flight times tho..... sorry

    or....lol

    train..

    17 Apr

Man Pic to Preston 19:16 - arr 19:55
Preston to Ayr (Scotland) last train at 20:53 arr after midnight (can sleep)
If booked as two separate journeys it should be about £5 and £8 respectively
Stop in hostel from Hostelworld for about £20

then Ryanair from Prestwick to Stansted on 18 Apr

    Dep 06:50 Arr 08:05 £2.00

and return as per Stansted - Dublin - Liverpool for a fiver.

If driving there are petrol costs, driving when tired before and after Stansted, which is well dodgy after long days, parking fees and maybe work on 21st.....

But the prices for Ryanair are changing after midnight tonight so...but always worth flying from any of the above...lateral thinking.
    Chars and enjoy.
