Is it the cooker or the electrics?

Hi Everyone,

I'm being driven mad by my cooker!! It's just over a year old and all of it works but something keeps causing the electric trip for the cooker to short. I can be using it quite happily for days and then boof the trip switch in the electric box switches it off! If it's the electric I can get the HA to fix it but if it turns out to be the cooker then I will be charged! But how do I figure out what is causing the silly thing to trip? Any advice welcomed!!

  • when the cooker trips does it tend to be when you have lots of things on (ie oven, hob, plate warmer etc)?
If it trips when you have lots on then it is load related and would tend to suggest that the fuse/tripper switch might not be beefy enough.

If it's tripping when using just one ring (for example) then it points more to being a cooker fault.

Another thing to look into is to see what other electrical appliances run off that circuit - it could be one of them and nothing to do with the cooker. Next time it trips then try to see what else is not working....

I'm no expert, but I've had a few problems like this myself!
  • Hi Snowdrop22,

Thinking about it it does tend to be when I have a ring and the oven on, but it's only the cooker on the circuit that trips!

I think I'll just have too get in touch with the HA andhope that it is the trip box not the cooker (especially since everything works on the cooker and it's only 1 year old),

    Thanks

I think the cooker should be on a dedicated circuit so it would be the only thing that trips.

If the cooker is only a year old and there are no problems found with the wiring then you should be getting in touch with the retailer about getting it looked at under warranty.
  • Hi,
I've just checked and it was only a 1 year warranty - which ran out in Dec 08,typical! The cooker is on a switch on it's own, I just don't get what can be causing it to trip, it's working fine!

If it is tripping the electrics then its not working fine. you need to get them both looked at determine the cause. If it turns out to be the oven I'd still approach the manufacturer and say its just over a year old so it shouldn't be causing problems like it is etc and see if they are willing to do anything to help.

The switch which trips in the "electric box" should have a rating on it xA or xAmps.
    What does this say?
  • Hi,

All I can see on the cooker trip is :

    B40
    5940s
    230/400v
    BSEN 60898

    ?

I think this is a 40A trip which is more than suitable for a normal cooker.

Its unlikley to be the trip itself so its either something with the cooker, the cable to the cooker from the point on the wall (eg loose connections) or the cable from the point to the fuse box/trip.

My money is with one of the first two.

I would agree with dougk. Get it checked out as soon as possible.
  • Thanks everyone looks like I'll have to get an electrician out myself then!
