It's really interesting to read other people's experiences of the Mirena, especially the bad ones. I have had my Mirena in for five years now and have never had any problems with it, quite the opposite in fact, it's the best thing I could've done and it's improved my life tremendously. The only 'problem' I'm having is that it is coming to the end of it's life and I am feeling the side effects of this. I'm having it replaced in the next four weeks though and will continue to have it for as long as possible. It's a shame that it doesn't work this well for every girl who has it, I guess it's like everything though, different things affect people in different ways. But for me it's been a Godsend :) x

Im glad you got it sorted and are feeling better - its such a shame it didnt work for you.
Like LilMissM here I have also have one for about 8 years with no problems whatsoever I love not having periods and get no pain.

    Glad you are sorted though.

  • Oh my goodness! Reading some of the posts on here has made me feel a bit squirmy. I've never tried the coil but, for what it's worth, I'd strongly recommend the Implanon implant. I know some women have negative experiences but I've nothing but praise - barely any bleeding in the year I've had it in, no side effects apart from being a bit spotty (no weight changes, bloating or PMT), and no pain at all. Of course it's not suitable for everyone and everyone reacts differently, but please think about it if you're struggling with contraception!

Well, its 5 days now and 99% of me is working well! Achey, heavy chest - gone. Cramps - gone. Pregnant looking tummy - nearly gone. Weight gain - 6 lbs has fallen off this week!!! Rubbish skin - no new spots!

BUT.... I've had 5 days of the worst bleeding I have ever had in my life. Its pain free (makes a change after 9 months of agonies with the coil!) but torrential. Its worse than I had after my sons were born. I stand up, cough etc and I can feel it "go". :-S

Just gone to the loo and come face to face with a LOT of clots. Quite scary but I'm hoping perhaps things will settle down now.
  • Been to hospital ths morning for an assessment prior to my ablation - good news - I'll get the op early in the new year. Bad news - whilst there's an 85% chance they'll stop my periods altogether, it may not cure the pain.

Any questions said the doctor - is there any risk of pregnanacy? Oh yes, but you won't carry it, you'll just keep miscarrying.

So the big question for me is what contraceptive will I use? The Pill isn't recommended at my age (47), I can't have the coil after the treatment because my womb might perforate.

I've asked my OH if he'll consider a vasectomy - he's spent all night with his legs crossed in fear!

I feel it would be unfair putting him through a vasectomy if the ablation doesn't work because the next option is a hysterectomy - so he will have had the op for nothing.

    Any suggestions?

As posted on #61 I too had heavy periods, irregular, stressful always carrying tampons and change of underwear. Work in a male environment so was embarrassed with the heavy clots etc. Microwave endometrial ablation was suggested in Sept, had the op in Oct and feel fantastic ever since. Weighing the success rate I felt there was nothing to loose.
    Hope this helps D

My Mirena coil fell out about 10 weeks ago- I had terrible back pains for a couple of days and then got what felt like contractions and the coil came out in a GIANT blood clot. Anyway once it was gone I was very similar to how you describe yourself! The bloating went, the fluid retention went, the sore bust, the pregnant looking tummy - however I had the heaviest bleed I think I had ever had - it lasted for about 2 weeks but I have to say that I haven't had anything since then. I was really alarmed at the type of bleed I had - I think it is hormones all over the placed after having the mirena in. I would never have another Mirena - I was fine with it at first but then I got weight gain, bloating, anxiety and all kinds PLUS the most painful periods - it didn't stop them but it did make them lighter but the trade off was horrendous pains! I am hopefully having an ablation in the New Year.

    Its scarey, isn't it, Jane?

After that horrendous evening (sorry, TMI but I actually had to clean the chair I'd been sitting on at one point), then the awful clots which frightened me half to death, it went back to a "normal" period.

The whole period from having the coil whisked out lasted 11 days which is fantastic by my 20-25 days standards. And now.... nothing! No spotting, pains, cramps, pains on going to the loo. No achey chest and I've now lost ELEVEN POUNDS, all from my swollen tummy which is now fairly flat!

I feel sort of sharp and less muddle headed. So glad it has gone. :-)

  • Just thought I'd add my experiences:

I had the mirena inserted in 3 months ago. I've not had any pregnancies and I've got a twisted uterus so I thought it would be painful - but to be honest it wasn't that bad -especially compared to my period pains!

For a month or so I had light bleeding on and off (nothing a panty liner couldn't handle) and some cramping (but again not as bad as usual) I also had horrible boil-like spots on my face which really made me miserable.
However I perseveered and since then no blood, no pain no boils - its lovely!
Before the Mirena I was really ill, physically & mentally and now I feel like a different person (in a good way :D) Hurrah!

Wow, very mixed reactions to Mirena. I have had them for about 13 years. I actually had to buy my first one. GPs have never been able to put them in properly, I always end up going to the gynae. I cant say I have any horrible side effects, only when the hormones have diminished. Good luck.
    Loving the sunny days!
  • Hi guys, am just wondering how long roughly it took for people's coil to settle in so to speak. Had mine fitted 7 weeks ago now and still spotting/bleeding, this was the reason why mine was fitted for medical purposes along with the obvious. I know its still early days but my gynae says next step is for the life of me can't remember what's it called lol bascially burning the lining of my womb, ablation is that it ? Just want some light at the end of the tunnel i think, dont get me wrong not got any side effects so to speak just this annoying bleeding/spotting which I was told coil would cure.

    Many Thanks for any replies
