Moving my gas meter box

Please advice me on whom to contact as I need my gas meter box moved to a new position. I am in the midst of changing suppliers. From ScottishPower to EDFEnergy. I live in West Sussex.

  • Contact your current supplier and they will forward you to the correct people who deal with moving the meters.
They send you forms that you have to fill out and a diagram to show the meters current position and where you want it moved to.

A word of warning though it can work out very expensive, we had ours moved last year and the cost varies depending on how far you want it moved from its current position. We had ours moved less than 1 metre and the cost was £800.

Did they give you a breakdown of how these costs were incurred? I would be interested in how they come to such a price.
  • It's all done on a points basis...you can tot it up yourself when you see their forms.

EG 3 points for moving the meter to a different wall, 1 point per metre moved from original location.

I'm looking at a bill of £900 to move a meter less than a metre because I want it on a different wall and it involves digging up a concrete path.

Im understand the concept of their point system, what I would like to know does this bear any relation to the amount of work done? Seeing that you have no choice as to who moves it, I interested to know if this is a pricing system which could be viewed as a 'nice little earner'.
