Insurance Advice

Options
Not sure this is the right place but my boyfriend recently crashed his car. The police want to charge him for careless driving and we are expecting the other party will want to claim his insurance.

However he needs to now drive my car to get to work and I want to make him a named driver for 1 month.

Do we need to declare the accident yet since nothing has been processed? I'm not trying to lie about it but he doesn't have points yet nor any claims so I'm not sure how it works?

Your Insurers will ask if he has "Any motoring convictions or pending motoring convictions" so if he is aware that they intend prosecuting him then he should declare it.

You should also declare the accident as they will want to know this.

If he speaks to his own Insurers they will often pay or assist in defending the charge as its connected with an accident they may have to pay out on so it would be worth speaking to them as well

This is a good tip, and entirely correct. A conviction for careless or dangerous driving will often scupper your chances entirely in the impending civil action, which is why insurer's will often get involved at that stage, because successfully defending the criminal charge will give them more of a chance of defending the civil claim.

  • Hi, good advice above, just one more point to add tho, I noticed your bf will be using your car to go to work, please make sure your insurance company are also aware of this as commuting is not normally automatically included for named drivers, he would, I guess, be the the main user for the month and therefore the Insurers should be made aware of this. Hope this helps.
