The Abbey sending me other customers post!

Been in my home for a few years and intially had the expected letters for the previous occupant, sent them back to sender with no probs.
Months went by and I was still getting them from the Abbey, immediately contacted Abbey who said they would need something on paper so wrote enclosing some of the letters. They said this would sort it. Also suggested getting hold of the customer to let them know and get an updated address for them. (I have no forwarding address for them)
Still getting the unwanted post tweleve months on and getting annoyed by this stage I contacted the Financial Ombudsman saying surely this must be a breach of Data protection and the obligations to take care of there customers details.
The case has now been closed with them telling that they have to send details occassionaly to the address held by them and that I would continue to recieve them!
This seems ludicrous to me, if I was a customer and knew that they were sending my personal documents to others when they knew I would never be the recipent I would not be impressed.
Wondered whether any has any experience of this??

I know about 10-15 years ago when I worked for a Bank, we had a woman in compaining that she kept receiving mail from our Recoveries Dept for her daughter who no longer lived there. She was told the same as you, the post had to be sent to the last known address for the debtor. This seems ludicrous to me, if I was a customer and knew that they were sending my personal documents to others when they knew I would never be the recipent I would not be impressed.
I don't think you would have any cause for complaint if you hadn't bothered to give the Bank your current address.

I had an Abbey account that I closed for the very reasons the OP has highlighted. I moved house and changed my address - to do this I actually visited the branch so I knew it had been processed. Some months later my bank card ran out and a new one didn't arrive so I popped into my branch to find out where it was....they'd sent it to my old address with the PIN! Luckily, the card and the PIN details were returned to them but it could have been entirely different. They tried to blame me telling me I hadn't let them know until I showed them my pass book with the details changed inside which had been done by them. Red faces all round I can tell you. So I closed the account and went elsewhere.0

Thanks for your thoughts,
This is really annoying me!
It seems ridiculous and risky with regard to fraudulant use, that knowing full well that the intended customers will never get the post and personal info they continue to send it! I would have thought this must be a breach of data protection or something with regard to the company's duty and customers details0 -

Potentially it is. But Abbey will say that it was a one-off mistake and not a systemic problem.0 -

Wish that was the case,
They know she does not live here nor will ever get the letters but they are ablidged to send changes in T&C's to last known address albeit they will never get them by sending them here, seems daft to me.0 -
