I'll take a look into this for you, but it might be helpful to post what you've already tried so we don't cover things that have already proven to be unsuccessful.0

Hi Anewhope,
Thank you very much for replying. I have so far done disk clean, ccleaner. I did google one solution which advised rename the file name of softwaredistribution within the windows program to softwaredistribtion old and added a new folder named softwaredistribution. I did this and it did not work, I am surprised that this code does seem to exist at microsoft.

Does it fail on both automatic updates and the web updates? http://update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/V6/default.aspx?ln=en-us
Does it have service pack 1 or did the factory reset not install that?
If it doesn't have service pack 1 download it here http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=B0C7136D-5EBB-413B-89C9-CB3D06D12674&displaylang=en0 -
This prog http://wiki.lunarsoft.net/wiki/Dial-a-fix is a very easy fix to most update problems. run it and tick all the boxes then tick go0

solved it in the end by a system restore. Thank you to everyone that replied and have saved some of the links for future reference.0
