Item 'missing' following MOT!

I took my car for it's MOT on Friday and when I collected it my sunglasses, which were in the pocket of the driver's door had vanished - I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that they were there when I dropped the car off as I cleaned the pockets out that morning and made sure that everything was neatly stashed in them. I questioned the garage and they checked and said they had not been found and that they would check with the test centre (I had not been aware that the car would be taken somewhere else for testing). When I rang this morning I was told that they had not been found there either. I told them that I wasn't accusing anyone but that I knew they were in there and asked them to please ask all the employees and check everywhere again which he said he would do and would ring me if they were found - I don't hold out much hope!!

Is there anything else I can do or is it my word against theirs? I am really upset as the repairs to get the car through it's MOT cost me £446  and now I am out of pocket for another £50 for my sunglasses!!!!!

I hope it wasn't the same place that broke my handbrake whilst the car was in their care when they did my MOT on Thursday, apparently i did it!!

Can you claim on their insurance, they don't like to but be firm, complain to their head office.
Life is about give and take, if you can't give why should you take?

Nothing you can really do. I was (half) sure when mine went in for the flood there were a pack of cigarettes in the door c'est la vie.

Unfortunately they are the head office, it is just a one-man-band! I rang trading standards and they said all I can do is inform the police, I think I may try putting my complaint in writing first but I don't think I am going to have any success really, I am so upset, I thought I could trust them!!

Not much help now, but you do have the options of; (a) emptying items from your car before an MOT and; (b) watching it being MOT'd.

Unfortunately, you are going to find it difficult to prove that the items were there before the MOT started.

    Good luck.

Maybe try a bluff, saying that as the sunglasses cannot be located and they are valuable ones, then you have no option but to report a theft to the Police, and see if they then are miraculously found.

This worked once when my DH had something go missing from his mum's hospital bedside locker. Missing item was produced in 30 seconds flat!

  • You should report it, but resign yourself to buying a new pair.

If they are so dishonest as to take the sunglasses, I wonder how honest they were that the car needed the £446 worth of repairs. Another garage next time me thinks :)
