Thermostat temperature???

  • I was only saying what I would do as Hubby is knowledgable in these areas. If I was selling I would get him to reinstate it all.
On our (older) system we have no bypass in the boiler, hence the one rad without a TRV. It is a small rad in a very big hallway, so the hall never overheats, it is also the rad closest to the boiler. There are 3 other rads in the hallway with TRVs so they turn off if it all heats up. We spend about £55 per month on gas, that is for a 280 sq m. 5 bed house, so we think that is not bad at these latitudes, especially as we are on a hill in a very exposed position.

I do hope I am not tempting fate here , but our pumps (one for heating, one for hot water) have been running for 18 years without problems. Otherwise we have a programmer that can set different times for both heating and hot water on any day in the week, also original. We also have a frost thermostat.

Although I am at home all day, we normally only need to heat for 2 or 3 hours in the morning and 4 or 5 in the evening in winter as the house has very good insulation. Between mid May and mid September we do not usually have the heating on at all, only the hot water.

This should I switch things off discussion seems to go on about all sorts of electrical things, PC's were recently discussed in the techie forum. Is it cheaper to run the CH constantly than warm it up when you need it has also been discussed recently.

Why don't people leave their car engine idling overnight, Or their cooker on. Or their washer on. Or every light on.. I know some people do, but I'm firmly in the switch off if your not using it camp, because it's wasteful, totally unnecessary, harmful to the planet, a fire risk, and costs money.. pennies it may be, but they all add up. (and I have never had a pump replaced - it'll probably go bang tonight now I've said that!).

I understand the point you are making but I think you have taken this out of context. It was suggested that leaving a pump running might shorten its life and I questioned that statement. However the whole thrust of the discussion on thermostats was how to set up the CH system efficiently in order to save money. Also the discussion on leaving the CH to run constantly was because some people had(mistakenly) been told this was the cheapest way to run the system.

On the wider issue of 'switch it off/leave it on' discussion I think some of the arguments of the 'switch off' brigade are nonsensical. We live in the 21st century and we have devices that we use for convenience. I think nothing illustrates this more than those who advocate that your TV should not be left on standby for the reasons you have given.

My TV consumes 0.6 watts on standby and if I leave it on 24/7 it will consume less than 40 pence of electricity in a year. Well let’s extend that argument further. Why do I need a remote control(as it uses expensive batteries – that are difficult to dispose of for environmental reasons and thus harmful to the planet) I can always change channels manually.

I suppose we can unplug all domestic appliances, like a microwave or oven, that have a timer that uses electricity.

As for fire risk! I have ‘hidden’ live wires carrying 240 volts that go to all my light switches and sockets. I leave my fridge, freezer, CH timer, boiler, outside security lights, burglar alarm, doorbell, etc etc permanently connected to electricity. What a risk I have been taking for years! and I don't know what to do to reduce that risk.

As for being wasteful, well so is cutting your lawn – why not let it grow? Why have a computer – we managed for years without them. Internet? – just so we can have silly discussions like this one.

Simple really, turn your mains off at the consumer box when you go out or go to bed ;-)
I really must stop loafing and get back to work...

But I will still have electricity coming to my consumer box and that must be a huge fire risk! Perhaps I could have an arrangement with the Electricity company to disconnect power to my property when I go to bed;-)

But not as big a risk as leaving the gas turned on which could cause explosions should it escape, and have you also considered the risk of flooding by not turning the water off at the stop !!!! (non PC) and draining the cold tank.

TV aerials attract lightning.... and I think the sky is falling down must tell Henny Penny.
That gum you like is coming back in style.
