Flea 'Season' Approaching

  • What is really interesting about most of the above posts is... the complete lack of understanding of basic flea biology. This is not the fault of posters above but the fault of vets who do not spend enough time educating their clients about fleas when they do the "flea consultation". I am inlcuding a link to Bayer company website regarding fleas - It worked just now so hope is OK and contains much useful information.

    A few misconceptions tho:
1 Cat vs Dog fleas - It matters not one bit they'll still infest Ur house the same. I find this has more to do with cat owners blaming dog owners for their problem and vice versa (I'm a cat owner BTW).
    2. Grass fleas - these are a myth - get over it - quickly - its a bit like the tooth fairy etc...
    3. Front**** is great - no its not - I saw a cat this morning hooching with fleas which had been treated with frontline for "years" - what a waste of money that had been.
    4. There is a flea season - well sort of - it runs from January to December in ur house cos its nice enough inside for them to exist all year round. Fleas hate it outside - we do not live in Southern USA / Aus / SA where exterior flea products are necessary

Finally for those who havent found it yet:

  • Hi

Simon, re: pt3, My cats have been treated March to October around every 6 weeks with frontline for the last 6 years and we don't get fleas. Think it's cos mine aren't very sociable outside and too territorial to let anyone else in. :D Fleas like me at least as much as the cats so I'd know if they were about quite quickly. However, if I was using a treatment which patently didn't work, I'd change it :)

Thanks for the lolcats link, been lookin for that :)

<<<never have routinely treated for fleas and in 16 years of dog owning, we had a flea infestation ONCE.

Cat fleas are much more common than dog fleas, and getting worse  (See map in post 13)

I think with our infestation that year, its because the house has old wooden floors - I guess the gaps between the floor boards were nice little hibernation nests for them and it was a very hot summer. But you would have been horrified fc, they were literally hopping about all over the place, like a cartoon. Even sitting on the loo Id get one or two jump on my leg. It was dreadful. Luckily OH took the boys away for a few days (human boys that is :)) so it gave me a free run of fumigating everything.

whoo how horrible!! We had mice like that in holland - all over the bl00dy place (except in the mousetraps!) and one ran over my foot whilst I was having a pee!! I am not scared of them, but jeez did I scream from the shock!

I killed another accidentally by dropping the kitchen bin on him - I was trying to catch him humanely in a bucket at the time! oops!:rotfl:
  • Frontline does not kill fleas on some cats-- I treated my 20 year old burmese cats last year with it, treated all the house as well and a week later they were still sciving with them. flea collars seem to work on our tabby cat best of all.
I might be crazy but I'm not stupid....
