Well, there is lot's to think about here. Thank you everyone.

Whilst I know that I prefer gas to the ceramic type hob that came with this house, I would be keen to road test an induction hob. I cook a lot of stirfries and I like 'instant heat'. Do you have to keep the pan on the hob? With gas I get the impression that you are still getting the heat from the flame even when you are 'flipping' the contents of the pan. Same when you tilt a pan for any reason. How does this work on an induction?

What about the pans? I have some Le Creuset, some Anthony WT stainless steel ones (not sure if there is any other metal sandwiched inbetween the SS on the base) and Tefal frying pans.

Someone mentioned that it was too expensive to get the gas across to where they wanted their hob, and that might be a problem that I have. The kitchen is now in a concrete floored extention.

I do have a while before I have to make a decision though. In fact I've seen 2 ring induction hobs and 2 ring gas hobs so should I have the best of both worlds? Decisions, decisions.........

I have seen houses (when we were looking to move) that have the gas pipe running around the outside of the building until its at the point where the gas is needed and then the pipe goes through the wall.

I`ve cooked on everything but an induction hob so i can`t speak for one of those, i prefer gas by a long chalk.

The easy way to know if your pans will work on an induction hob is to try a magnet on the bottom of them, if the magnet sticks the pans are okay for the hob!

Currently have gas hob but currently redoing kitchen and fancied a ceramic hob , but someone told me not as good for cooking with as dont generate same even heat. Just wondered if this was rubbish or if would be better sticking to gas which is all I have ever used. Anyone any knowledge of both before I order.

    Thanks

I'd go for gas every time - much more controlable, but there are issues regarding the environmental aspects of using fossil fuels.

Take a look at this thread - Gas or electric hob? I'll merge this thread later.

  • At my last house I had a ceramic hob. No gas in the villiage. I hated it. not at all controllable. Everything took ages to get to temp, then you had to take it off as turning it down didn't have an immediate effect. It did look nice though.

I'd love to have gas again, it's not something I can afford to have run in to my road though!
Ceramic hobs are nice if you like polishing things, a lot.
(I don't, which is why my hob is always dirty)
