Asking for a MQ over your entitlement

Options
We just received posting notice for april and looking at filling in forms for our next MQ at the minute.
We only have one child, so we are only entitled to a 2 bed, but I understand we are able to ask for a 3bed if they have any spare? Is this correct?
Do we need a 'proper' reason, or would just wanting more space be enough? (We are very cramped in a tiny 2 bed at the mo)
We have MOD1132 form, where on there would we put this request or would it need to be done somewhere else?

xx

The first time I was married I had two kids and we were still only put in a 2 bed house (even though they were boy and girl they were very young)

the second time i was married (ooops) with no kids (living with me that is) I was given a 3 bedroom house.....so its really down to luck and if you have very special needs.

But its always worth talking to the hive of where your going and getting info on each estate so you can put them in as your prefered area (though I don't know if they still let you do this)
If you find yourself in a fair fight, then you have failed to plan properly

I've only ever been wrong once! and that was when I thought I was wrong but I was right
  • I understand that rank is no longer an entitlement if you are sgt (or above dinkys.) I think it very much depends on availability at the station. However, if you are allocated above your entitlement, you can be requested to move out should there become a shortage of your quarter type in the future (never known this to happen though.)

We have asked for above entitlement before, and just put a letter in with the form. Although it probably helped that they had lots of large quarters available.
In the letter we put that we were looking to expand our family shortly and if possible could we request above entitlement.
  • Does depend on what's available and there doesn't seem to be too many places with 'spare capacity'. We struggled to be allocated anything last summer and the posting before that we accepted below entitlement as we didn't really want a hiring miles away.

However, always worth asking! We have twice: first time we accepted a condemned quarter for a year (demolished after we moved) and 2nd time we got a quarter on a part empty estate with most families moving in a further 6 months down the line. My husband was promoted within the 6 months bringing us up to entitlement which was useful as there was housing shortages soon after.

    Good luck :)

Theres no harm in asking! We asked for a 3 bed when i fell pregnant with my first child. As there were plenty available we were granted one.

There is no harm in asking. I think it all depends opn where you live and what they are like. I know some people at waddington had no chance of upgrading even after trying but then I know that some camps are easy to talk to and work things out. Give it a go thay can only say no or hopefully yes. good luck
  • Where we are there is a big fight on about it all.

They are using us as an excuse to put senior ranks in a certain part of the estate whilst all the bigger houses (same amout of rooms tho) are standing empty.

Thank god we are posted soon!

If anyone has any details of quarters of Woodbridge (one of our possible destinations) they would be gratefully received!

Hiya, Lived in woodbridge a few years back. The houses are large as they were built by the Americans. The bungalows aren't great though. Half of the estate were sold off a few years ago so its a mix of military/civilian. Quite a nice place to live if a little bit far out. I still live in Suffolk but in a brand new military quarter. If you want to know anything else just let me know.

Can't tell you anything about the Woodbridge quarters but I have heard that there are a lot more MQ houses available than SLA so I don't think it's in short supply. The base is in the middle of bloody nowhere though and there's barely a phone signal even outside the gates. You'll need to drive to make the most of it. Even the nearest train station is a teeny village one and a few miles from the barracks.

The area is really lovely though, but obviously rural. There are some gorgeous villages nearby and loads of English Heritage/National Trust sites. Ipswich is a fairly short drive away, which isn't massive but is quite pretty and has everything you really need.
  • Thanks for the input guys we have been given a very very small 2 bed, no harm in asking though I guess. xx
