Has ny washing machine finally died?

Today I have put a wash on 4 times and it is still soaking wet (warm water, so obviously not gone through the whole wash). Earlier while I was hoovering I smelt burning and thought it was the hoover but since then I have checked the filter on the washing machine and found black charred stuff in it.

Do washing machines still have plastic belts? I know years ago they did and I knew how to change one if it went but with more modern machines I'm not so sure. Besides, I can't get into the back of this machine with a normal screwdriver like before, this one has something similar to an allen key fitting.

I will have to call out a engineer but has anyone experianced this before and was it just something as simple as the belt?

  • I dismantled a 10yr old Bosch washing machine today and it did have a belt. Ours stopped spinning and it was the bushes in the motor, I changed them which immproved the situation for a while but it was never 100% again. Quite often motors can give off a burning smell. No idea about the black stuff in the filter though !

Thanks Beaker for your reply. I told hubby when he got in from work last night and he has decided it's time to get rid of this one and get a new one so we're off shopping this morning. :T

This particular machine has given me nothing but trouble since we bought it 3-4 years ago. Last year I thought it had come to the end of it's life but it managed to carry on for another 12 months. But now I'm looking forward to getting another one. ;)

yes its most likely the drive belt. you can get the star drivers/bits to remove the rear fixings from the pound shop. or any tool shop. they sometimes come in those screwdriver bit acc boxes.
    Get some gorm.
