Some places will accept photocopies, others like passport/driving license require to see originals. I was lucky when I changed my name, done it at the same time as my passport was due renewed anyway, and change of address on driving license, so was sending a load of papers at once.4 Stones and 0 pounds or 25.4kg lighter :j0

I'm changing my name to my h2b's mainly because we want to start a family and I would prefer to both have the same surname as our children. It sounds old fashioned when I say it but thats what is important to both of us.
Did say about double barrel and FIL2b nearly chocked oops! (it wouldn't sound right together so not really an option)0 -
Thanks for the advice, I spoke to Halifax who my mortgage is with today and they said I could just take the certificate into a branch and get it sorted, so I may try and do that with other banks / credit cards as it'll save sending off and waiting for it to come back! Unfortunately it's a bit late to get at extra copy at the ceremony, wish I'd thought of that beforehand!
Looks like I've opened a bit of a can of worms with the taking on husband's name debate, guess that one's all down to the individual, I've taken on my husband's and I am more than happy with my choice to do so but I can understand why people would have trouble deciding. In our case it's lovely to have something shared and will save any dilemma when we have children, I want us to be a family all with the same name - although it's a few years off yet!0 -
I can't wait to take my H2Bs surname, for me, its a big part of the marriage, I don't quite understand why people would rather keep their own surname, if you are doing that, then why not just stay engaged?0

You could turn that round and say why not just change your name, not bother marrying...
It's a very personal choice. For me, I'm staying with my own surname, but for others it's the right thing to do to change to the mans surname. It's a very personal choice. Doesn't make us wrong, it makes our opinion different from yours hun, that's all.
Sorry to have hijacked the original thread yesterday Starla! :beer:0 -

I am also taking my husbands surname but to be honest I don't agree with your statement 'if you are not taking your husbands name, why not stay engaged' - I think a fair few people see marriage as more than just a name change! Why don't you just change your name?? probably because you see marriage as more than that too! ;o)
There may be various reasons why someone would not take their husbands name. One of my friends was one of 3 sisters and felt that her family name would not be continued as there was no brothers and she felt quite strongly about keeping her surname, which she decided to double-barrell. Another friend made the decision for more practical reasons which was that her first name was the same as her husbands surname! yes really!!
It's a funny old world!
Finally decided to start growing up when it comes to money!:j

i'm thinking of taking H2B surname and keeping my surname as a middle name.
I am also a traditionalist and think that taking your husbands name is part of getting married but my surname has been part of my life for nearly 30 years! also both of my parents have died and think that it is a way of keeping their memory and what they gave me alive.0 -

I've been married for nearly 5 years and when I got married at the age of 35 I made it clear to my DH that I would gladly marry him, but I was going to keep using my surname and that's what I've done.
One of the reasons being that his name is difficult to spell and I've seen so many different variations of it that it's untrue! He even uses my name when booking a taxi or restaurant!
It has caused confusion on occasion though, but it's never been too much of an issue!
There's nothing wrong with the name I was given and let's face it, that's the name that will go on my coffin and gravestone, not my married one. It's the name you come into the world with and the name that I'll go out with too.
Do what is right for you and your circumstances......0 -
I had a double barrelled surname - my name first then DHs. I got married in August last year and still haven't changed it on everything! Have done the bank and my work, mortgage company etc, but still have to do it with the council tax, driving licence etc.
