Name changing

I was just wondering for those that have done it, how the practicalities of changing your name work. Do most places ask to see your marriage certificate? And if so do they insist on original or photocopy? It must take ages if you have to send it everywhere, wait for it to come back, repeat etc, and I can send it recorded delivery but what about when it is being returned to you? I wondered if I got my driving license or something changed first then would other places accept that as proof? And also for house deeds, do you have to pay to change these?

I feel an administrative nightmare coming on!!

    Me too!

It's so long ago since I did it the first time, I can't remember what I had to do!
  • Why don't women want to keep their own name? Or maybe that should be "Why don't women keep their own name?"

    Just wondering in general.

    Tradition?
    Respect for your new husband?

I'm changing my name to that of my future husband as I kept my 'old' married name for my childrens' sake after my divorce. There's no way I can continue with my ex-husband's name when I marry again - that's just rude :p

I think I will use both names

I really like my surname, I have had it for nearly 30 years...but I want OH's surname because that's the one the kids have.

Plus, they do sound 'right' together and they are both only 5 letter names.

I'm still changing my name with places 2 months on:rolleyes:

I would get some copies done of your marriage certificate then send off original copy for driving license. Mine was sent back quicker than I thought. The bank will also want to see original so maybe do this first.

Credit card company wanted a copy sent and some companies maybe want to see photo ID (paypal for example) so you cant do these until you have your driving license back.

    Good luck;)

This subject has kept me awake at night, caused I don't know how many rows in this house! I like my surname, I'm 38 years old this year, and don't really want to loose it. My future husband can't see this way of thinking at all. He says it's tradition, he's looking forward to being called Mr & Mrs. I said name one person who would call us that....he couldn't.
We're not having any more children (we both have children from previous relationships, all grown up), so that's not even an issue.
I think that it's not a big deal, and okay I'll change my name, but then when we discuss it further, I come up with so many reasons to keep my identity, to keep who I am, that I just get all bothered again, and want to stay as I am.
I'm so relieved to know now that I'm not the only person who thinks like this. All my friends have been married for 20 - 30 years, I don't know anyone who got married recently, so had no idea I'm not alone.
But if you keep your own surname after marriage, do you feel guilty?

I can't decide what to do - I like my surname! And his surname doesn't go very well with my first name...
But we prob will have kids, and I don't want to have a different surname than them.
    Such a quandry!

You can ask to have more than one marriage certificate at the time of the marriage. We had 3 copies made so we were able to keep one and use the other 2 to send away to the various places that needed to see an original. I would never have thought about doing it but my FIL told us to do it. It worked really well.
