when i had a similar issue BT allowed me to cancel my line but as long as the new account holders called the same day they could get a new account set up with no fee's
best to call BT and check

Yes BT can do a cease and reprovide to swap the name of the account holder. The current name calls BT to arrange the cease and the new name calls BT to arrange the reprovide linked to the cease keeping the same number. Shouldn't be any fees for this.

However, to do this BT close the old account and start a new one for the new account name. This means that any services you have on the phone line (e.g. CPS, BT privacy, broadband, etc) WILL BE TERMINATED. The new name will have a brand new phone service from BT but with the original number.

And the new name will be entering a new minimum period contract.

or you can do what i did to get around this (as i did not want to lose the service to my broadband), I signed up for Sky Line Rental in MY name (even though the landline was in my parents name), the transfer went through fine, even my father got a letter from BT to say sorry you're leaving the transfer will happen on X date, if you wish to stop it please call 08000 xxx xxxx. then afetr a couple of months, i moved the line to Post Office where I have stayed since.... am assuming i would be able to move to BT, btu the post offices package more than suits my needs, plus the bills in my name now
    £4988 Lloyds TSB Mastercard
    £400 O/D Lloyds TSB
    £2650 Lloyds TSB Loan
    £5070 Black Horse Finance

Skint, but I have a plan.... an MSE Plan!!!

unlikely given they treat the change as a new contract you would be tied by your original contract up to 12 months

Yes, but expect to pay an early termination fee, and the new name would be entering a new contract. (Obviously not including true name changes - by marriage/deed poll etc)
