Once the sale has gone through...

Hi
I hope I'm in the right place. OH and I are FTB and an offer we placed on a property has been accepted. We have applied for a mortgage and are instructing the solicitors to get moving tomorrow. I may sound a bit thick but once the sale has gone through (fingers crossed there) how/when do we get the phone, electricity and gas etc sorted? I've had a brief look over the internet and can't find much info.
Any replies will be much appreciated.
Thanks!

Once you have exchanged contracts and have a completion date, you can phone up the utilities companies and arrange for the new services to be sorted for your completion date. It's not easy having a good time. Even smiling makes my face ache.0 -
Whatever else you do, don't forget to read the meters immediately you get the keys. This is an open forum, anyone can post and I just did !0

And take photos of them too!!0

Thanks! My take on it is, the vendors will notify their providers that they will be leaving (completion date) which will be 'cut off' date? Then we arrange connection on completion date. Is it worth asking the vendors who their current providers are? Would this help us compare prices amongst companies as we have nothing currently to compare?0

From the pack that I've just received from the solicitors, the sellers will have to fill out a form stating exactly who they're currently with for gas, electric, broadband, cable, telephone. So you will know eventually. But if you will like to find out sooner, you could always ring up the EA and ask them to find out for you.
I am personally going to do a rough price comparison on Uswitch or some site but like you said, no idea what our consumption is going to be so might be a bit premature..0 -
When i moved in.... i just got the info off the previous owners who they were with, noted down and photo'd the meters then a few days after completion (as we moved in over a weekend....) then arranged elec/gas/phone the following week
I was advised to do this just incase of any last minute issues that might delay completion!0 -
On the day of completion, what normally happens is:
- you receive a phone call from your solicitor saying it's completed
- you go to the estate agent to pick up the keys
- you go to the new property and enter
- you then read the electricity, gas, water meters and phone those readings through to the companies, giving them your details.
- get a locksmith lined up too, to change the locks, or have the barrels ready yourself to do it yourself. You don't know who has keys!
You won't know who the bills are with though, so you can ask before or there is (allegedly) some central number/website to check.
Then you move in, unpack some stuff, get fed up with it and head for the pub, picking up a takeaway on the way home.0 -
Nothing gets cut off
The people leaving will take the readings and give them to the utilities and you do the same and ring them up with your details. 0 -
