I assume you'll be going to college? Or are in last year at your school? Get in touch with the IT Services Department, i used to get towers, monitors, and all the little bits for nothing when i was at college...sometimes it would be a couple quid, other times a trip to the canteen to get their coffee's but they are usually pretty good with things like that if your good to them.
Obviously it was ex college property so no hard drives were supplied and everything was un-security marked but would do for you. When trying to get something free its unlikely a sensible person will throw in a hard drive.2008 Competition Wins: £200 Cash (Boffer's Youtube Bag O' Crap Video Competition 2)

If you live in Portsmouth you can have the laptop I got on an auction site but have been unable to boot up properly, needs boot up disk?. Its very low spec I think it runs microsoft 2000, 64mb ram?0

You will get much better spec for your money if you buy a desktop 2nd hand. If you know someone who is upgrading a desktop they will probably give it to you for free with the old chunky screens. I suggest you try that and spend some time finding a space for it all instead of looking for a laptop

Yes I echo the comment that you do not need a laptop - a standard PC should do and you are more likely to get one of these for free (or cheaply).
I'd definately try Freecycle - my local groups often have PC's going for free (and sometimes laptops too though tehse tend to be older)To infinity and beyond!0 -
do you have a branch of CEX near where you live? IF you've got any dvd's/games and stuff that you don't use anymore you could either trade them for cash, or if you had enough stuff to exchange you could see if they had a decent 3nd hand laptop in. Other than that, all but one piece of advice you've been given is ace and ebay's always a great place for looking.
One other idea, and apologies if anyone above has said this but i'm looking after 3 hyper boys at the moment and i've not had time to read every reply, is don't some mobile companys do packages now where you can get a broadband stick and a laptop off them for a monthly fee?
Hope you manage to get what you're looking for anyway, and sorry you had to get at least one insensitive and unhelpful reply!
All the best!0
