i would also have thought that these people who 18 years or more ago lost their job due to the industry changes, would have concentrated their lives or slightly more than hoping to put one over on the then prime minister who brought the UK up from the gutter where labour ( not for the first.. or last time) had put the country.
short or just very selective memories some people have.
You mean the government that ravaged UK manufacturing industry, moved us from manufacturing positive to negative in 1984 (I think), and created an over reliance on the service sector esp financial.'Just think for a moment what a prospect that is. A single market without barriers visible or invisible giving you direct and unhindered access to the purchasing power of over 300 million of the worlds wealthiest and most prosperous people' Margaret Thatcher0 -
some of you remind me of the council house buyers of the times...thought they were tories because they had bought a council house.
.when in reality the tories are there to conserve the wealth and power of the elite....
they could not give a toss about mr and mrs average...anyone who thinks different is kidding themselves..It is nice to see the value of your house going up'' Why ?
Unless you are planning to sell up and not live anywhere, I can;t see the advantage.
If you are planning to upsize the new house will cost more.
If you are planning to downsize your new house will cost more than it should
If you are trying to buy your first house its almost impossible.0 -
“Did the miners lose the strike? Yes, we did, to be honest. We took on Margaret Thatcher and the might of the Tory Government, and we lost. But look what’s happening now. In the end, we’re the ones having the last laugh, Maggie.”
I'm sure that Thatcher would be as pleased as the miners that it has become profitable again. The whole article is written as if Thatcher had some personal vendetta, but in reality it was just too expensive.
Quite right.
However it was VERY EVRY important for the governemnt to smash the unions back then so that they do not have any stranglehold over indultry today.
Smashing the unions was an important factor in bringing greater prosperity to Middle England which was what Mrs Thatchers administration accomplished during the 80s.0 -

Thats not to say that all the pits were profitable or that non of the miners were crazed communists trying to provoke a general strike. But it became very clear that many of the "unprofitable" pits were actually very profitable. RJB mining bought quite a few which turned healthy profits for a further decade.
And so here we are with 400 year supply of coal beneath our feet. We buy coal dug in Brazil which is shipped half way across the globe by boat, then a few hundred miles by train from port to power station. According to the Tories this is a more profitable solution to digging the coal up in a pit a few miles away from the power station. Mind you, once a deep pit is closed they're probably right - the cost of reopening them once the surface buildings have been swept away is prohibitive.

Remember everyone that ROCHDALE PIONEER has admitted to be a card carrying Labour and Union man as well as a previous communist.
Disregard what he says as it is vile-ridden and jaundiced against Conservatism.0 -
Hatfield is not so much as having the last laugh....more still going on about something from 20 million years ago that NO ONE cares about.
Everyone else has gone passed it and moved on if the Hatfield-i-onians are still stuck in that rut then tbh maybe they deserve it.

The government did not 'ravage UK manufacturing industry'. UK manufacturing industry had managed a perfectly god job of that on its own throughout the 1960s and '70s with massive under-investment, inadeqaute management and bloody-minded 'Fred Kite' style trade unions.
UK manufacturing in the dinosaur industries was effectively finished long before Margaret Thatcher came to power.0 -

Wonders how much money has been spent since on benefits etc for the aftermath of the numerous communities that she completely destroyed.
Scargill was branded a nutter by the press. But looking back, I think almost every single thing he warned about came true.Martin Lewis is always giving us advice on how to force companies to do things.
How about giving us advice on how to remove ourselves from any part of MoneySupermarket.com
I hereby withdraw any permission Martin might have implied he gave MoneySupermarket.com to use any of my data. Further more, I do not wish ANY data about me, or any of my posts etc to be held on any computer system held by MoneySupermarket.com or any business it has any commercial interests in.0 -
