Things to do - Sherwood Castle Holiday Village

Serwood Forest, Rufford, Nottighmashire.

DH, the kids and a pregnant me are going there in May. I need ideas of what to do in the area. Not amusment parks, none of us are very interested in them. DS1 is 7, DS2 will be 4 (he has monility problems though) and I will also probably have mobility problems (SPD).

We were planning on a visit to Longleat safari park and warwick castle (a 2 hour drive is not putting us off).

Any info on the area or links to good websites would be much appreciated.

The site is next to Rufford country park which is well worth venturing round.

Sherwood forest visitor centre is about 5 mins away by car

White Post farm park is very good:

Sundown adventure land is a theme park for under 10 year olds so would be great for the 7 and 4 yr olds.

Lots of stately homes within easy travelling distance as is the Peak District ( Matlock Bath is a nice touristy place).

Warwick castle is too far away .. Longleat is definately too far away ( 4 hrs+ )
  • Nottingham castle also, recommend white post farm, southwell & its minster, very pretty town all within 20 -30 mins of you!
  • I live in this area, there are many beautiful parks, clumber, thorseby, rufford and sherwood, all in a very close radius, If its animals your intrested in theres "Wetlands Nature Reserve" in Sutton !!! Lound about a ten min drive, theres loads of deer that feed out of your hands, and wallabys, goats, monkeys, its no where neer on the scale of longleat, but a nice local reserve that i often go too.

Theres Lincoln Cathedral, (lincolns a lovely city too.)

I too think Longleat is way to far!!!

  • Are you sure you know exactly where Sherwood Castle is? It's 200 miles from Longleat.
If you are self catering the nearest supermarket is Tesco in Ollerton village, just down the road.
Rufford park is the closest to the site, take plenty of bread to feed the ducks. It's flat but can be uneven in parts but the lake is easily accessable from the car park. If you can't walk as far as the abbey then you can drive round to the main car park.
Warwick Castle is too far as well. Google Crich Tramway museum and Gullivers Kingdom at Matlock Bath. Both within easy reach.
If you go down to the woods today you better not go alone.
