This is another area that confuses me
    • obviously, Joe Bloggs is a third party, and my insurance would pay to repair his car.

      Correct

    • are you saying that my brother is also classed as a third party and my insurer would also pay to repair his car

No - your brother would not get his car repaired if you were driving it and had a fault accident. If he wanted to protect his car whilst you were driving he would need to include you as a named driver under his Comprehensive policy, or extend his cover to any authorised driver. Your brother could sue you of course for damage sustained to his vehicle by your negligent driving but your insurers would not become involved, as it aint covered

Well that was exactly what I always thought, which is why I was confused when I read Kiri-Here's post:

so if you are driving your brother's car, for example there is no automatic comprehensive cover per se : he would have to claim against you and your Insurer would pay him, if at fault.

Usually DOC is allowed as long as the other car isn't owned by you. But there are a number of main stream insurers (eg morethan) that also add that the other car cannot be owned by your spouse/partner either. (This will be what has happened in the tv programme).

Check your insurance certificate to see whether your policy excludes driving other cars owned by your spouse to get the definitive answer in your case.

Also double check at each renewal in case they slip a change in.
