I use my local butcher now, but I have used Aubrey Allen in the past (they're local to me and a friend used to work there) http://www.aubreyallen.co.uk/

They're not rock bottom prices, but they're good prices for the quality you get. It's good meat and they do seem to care about quality and ethics.

Also they have an offer on delivery until the end of the month.

I suggest you cut out the middle man and buy direct from the farm gate.

I keep pigs, lambs, chickens and turkeys for our own consumption - I dont sell it but many other home-producer will sell it.

When buying pork i suggest you look for foraging outdoor reared, pigs reared outside with room to roam and forage will taste sublime compared to pigs raised inside or in concrete stys.

[FONT=Verdana,Arial,sans-serif]There is a family run farm in the village of Isleham. They sell home produced 21 day hung Hereford Beef, Pork, Bacon and Ham and hope to do chickens soon also reared on the farm. There is a small, no frills shop and they sell from a stall on Saturday mornings in the village. The prices are similar to Butchers shops. Have a look at their website:

  • I always buy chicken from our local farm, always excellent quality and great prices, i would much rather give my hard earned cash to a small local business than to a supermarket. :D
  • I'm just in the process of sorting out the delivery for a whole lamb. We've done lots of research on this as we wanted to be sure that the welfare was right - for that same reason we wanted to find a small supplier rather than an industrial one, if that makes sense. I eventually found our supplier via the River Cottage forums - I contacted a lady from there who had no lamb available herself at present but passed my details onto her friend, who does. I won't post a link at the moment as until we've tasted the goods I wouldn't feel right doing so, what I will say though is that she has been a joy to deal with from the start - genuinely wanting to help and offering advice when asked. I'll happily return here and recommend assuming all is well once the meat has been sampled. We'll have paid £120.00 inc delivery for ours - for a beast weighing around 20kgs. we're having it butchered in standard cuts for that - with legs and shoulders being halved and the breast having the bone left in.

Find out if there is a monthly farmers market or similar in your area. Once you know a good producer thats local ish there usually more than happy for you to buy in bulk and either arrange delivery or for you to pick it up (at their farm or at the market).

I dont tend to buy in large bulk orders due to the size of my freezer but do tend to get a months worth of meat at a go!

If you are happy to drive north of Cambridge then head up to Stow Bridge near Downham Market for Jeff Sergeant's butchers. You can buy in bulk and the meat is wonderful. You can call ahead with your order and then drive up to collect. We wouldn't go anywhere else (particularly for their lovely sausages), and there are even customers who travel up from Essex to stock up!

    third recommendation for Costco.
Perhaps it's just where I live but the local farm shops to me are more like upmarket pricey deli's than what I would class as a proper farm shop.
