They had veg pre xmas at 39p, and there was also a 59p price structure.

The Mushrooms will be the best seller, Plums and Grapes will be quite plentiful over the next few weeks as volumes arrive from South America.Oranges are quite plentiful with southern Europe/ Egypt is quite plentiful this season. The Apples are European and sadly a crop that is heavy in small sizes this season and Potatoes are quite pletiful. Still some good bargains to be had and if you shop at your local market for veg rather than then big stores you will find bargains still about

I wish we had a local market, we have always used one if there was one nearby. Is the fruit and veg in Aldi generally good quality? I find a lot of supermarket fruit goes off really fast now, or it goes mouldy when it isn't even fully ripe yet. Also when you look at bags of salad and spinach it all looks wet! I got nice spinach and kale in Lidl last week and there was no moisture in either bag that I could see, I won't buy them in Tesco any more.

Oh no, not grapes again - I'm getting through about half a punnet a day whilst they have these on offer!

There are certain products that smaller retailers do not handle properly mangoes for example need to be sold with a slight give to them not rock hard like they do in the discounters. They sell them like that as they have more shelf life but sadly unless you keep a mango at a minimum of 10 degrees it will never ripen, ideally it needs 2 days at 22 degrees and then 1 day at 15 degrees and eaten at room temprature. Salad bags are spun dry and once again need to be handled correct throughout the distribution chain, when it gets to store level that is where the abuse can be at its worse. If it Looks wet dont buy it should be the rule.

I know a little about Produce ( but not a supplier to any supermarket chain) as I import fresh produce and have done for over 25 years.

Salad bags are one of the few things that Aldi never seem to get right. They always look awful, often wet and with leaves starting to brown at the edges. It beats me how they ever manage to sell any.

Thank you Teahfc for your sensible advice! If only the big supermarkets had people like you running their fruit and veg. departments we might get better quality!
I do avoid anything bagged that looks wet, I always think it must be just a step away from starting to rot, often it is already smelly. Unfortunately it is increasingly difficult to get bags of any veg. without some degree of moisture present in Tesco.

FWIW I find the Co-op (not a shop I normally use) to be the best for this sort of thing.

Thanks for the info. If you add bus fare/car parking to the prices at our local market it is no longer cheap!

I only went in Aldi a couple of weeks ago to get a bird feeder my sister told me about and I came out with half the shop. I was very impressed with the quality of the veg (and also the cooked meat, but that is another thread) that I bought and the grapes especially got good comments from my family in that they were hard and not mushy.
