Duff Builder - Advice needed

Hi

I recently employed a builder to install my kitchen, it has been one disaster after another. I fired him last week and am now in the process of picking up the peices of his faulty work.

My main concern is the electrics. When agreeing to do the work he assured me he was a competent person and could install the new sockets he went on to install a new ring main all of which I now see is not up to scratch.

I am going to get the Building control people round to inspect everything - will I get into trouble at all? If I have to rip off walls etc will I be able to claim of the builder?

Probably very niave as this is our first house I am now dreading the bill to put things right.

Any help advice appreciated.

you would have to take the builder to the small claims court to get your monies back for faulty or incomplete workmanship.
  • Where do i start:

    - electical cable is on the floor under cabinets
    - cooker switch is taped together in cupboard
    - sockets give me electric shocks so they can't be used
    - cables are all really shodily connected (you can see the copper wires in some cases

The list goes on. He told me he was allowed to carry out the work under something called part p but a friend has said if its in the kitchen he is not allowed and I wont be able to sell my house as its not certified (didn't know it had to be) I am concerned if I contact Building control I will be fined or be in trouble or would it be him?
  • Does anyone know what will happen to me and my house if i report to the building control people the work my builder has done as unsafe?

I wouldn't have thought anything would happen to you regarding the Building Control people - they are there for our protection after all.

I'm not sure about electrics, but if you've had any gas work done by a non registered gas installer you could be held responsible.

I would give building controll a ring and get some advice first, they can be very helpful.

I wish they would bring out a registration scheme for builders, a simple card to show what they are able/allowed to do.

Hope you get it sorted pumpkinpud

Will give them a ring on Monday and see what they say.
