Corkage Q

Hi everyone!

Just wondered if £10 per bottle of wine for corkage is about right or quite expensive? I have to say I grudge paying someone £10 to open a bottle! lol! I suspect our venue want us just to buy their house wine at £14.50 a bottle. We may just not bother putting wine on the tables altogether just give drinks for toast etc.

Any thoughts?

Ours is £4 per bottle hence the reason why we are buying our own as their wine is priced at £13.95

Ours is very expensive on corkage too but the venue hire is quite reasonable considering the area, so we figure its six of one and half a dozen of another really.

£8.50 corkage on wine and £9.50 corkage on champagne/sparkling wine. We managed to get a great deal on some cava so its still working out at less than their cheapest bottle. Need to start sourcing wine now.

Most places I have seen that allow you to supply your own wine have been cheaper than our place.

  • we r payin £6.75 a bottle which i think is a rip off for openin a bottle of wine, we are buyin our own wine as with cockage it still works out cheaper but in all our wine itself costs £141 and the cockage works out as £421 so a big rip off!!!

Is cockage the same as corkage? :p

How is it a rip off to charge for corkage? The venue is not getting the mark up on the wine, but still provide the glasses, plus the staff to ensure glasses are clean and to put them on tables, open and pour the wine, and to take the glasses off the table and wash them. They probably don't charge for breakages either.

A bottle of wine will provide around 6 glasses. If the corkage is £6 then it's £1 per glass to do all of the above. I don't think that's a rip off at all.

Do you object when you buy drinks in the pub that they cost more than you would pay to drink at home?
  • I just think its a lot of money when where iam gettin married they DONT pour it.

  • Try having a moan about it to the events manager as we did and my venue has waived the corkage fee you never know they may be up for negotiation - its worth a shot :D

Waiving the charge would mean zero ;)

Perhaps negotiate a flat amount (that works out less than what it would be per bottle)?
