Energy Saving Lightbulbs

Hello all

I'm thinking of getting energy saving lightbulbs but I'm put off by the shape of them! Just now i use ordinary 40watt bulbs. I just think the shape of the Energy Saving ones looks odd.

Does anyone know if you can get Energy Saving ones that are shaped spherically like normal?

Comments

  • you can ones with a glass envelope like this:-

They do tend to be larger than normal bulbs though, and when I've tried enclosed ones I found they tended not to last quite as long as the normal ones, although I guess they might have improved them as I haven't bought that type for some time.

how many bulbs are you looking at replacing?, are they all 40W?, are you doing it to save money on your bills?, yes you can get spherical ones, or, http://www.ebulbshop.com/acatalog/GLS_Style_Bayonet_Fit_9_watt_.html you need to buy special ones for use on dimmers or PIR type Electronic switches, cost more though.

  • I'm replacing about 5. 4 in the lounge and one in the bedroom. The lounge ones will need to be dimmers. They're all 40watt and i am doing it to save money. the normal ones seem to go all the time!

Thanks for the links, i've been looking at them. it's quite confusing knowing which of the fitments is right, tho!

They do, but they are about £2.50 each now.

I work for Tesco and they go in fits and starts, sometimes they will be a rip off £2.50 a bulb like you say, then suddenly we will get shipped a load of them and they will be 10 for £1 or £1.49 each

Keep your current ones until you find a good offer on the bulbs you want, then stock up on them, wont have to buy another lightbulb then for about 10 years :rotfl:

You'll need to get special ones to use with a dimmer switch; they're a good bit dearer than the regular energy savings bulbs. Or do what I did, ditch the dimmer switch!

Yep Agree Ditch the Dimmer, a Dimmer Does Not Save Electricity!

we've got them here..in built in uplighters so they can't be seen, and all the other rooms have paper shades...it's VERY 80's timewarp. Works well, but god..I'm not touching the shades. Been there before!

I actually like paper shades, they really soften the light. But most people seem to associate them with student houses. :o Maybe they will reappear in all the housey magazines and I will be proven as the trend spotter I always fancied being! :p
