Should I take out breakdown insurance for my dishwasher - it is not working properly

Hi all
r has
My Bosch Dishwasher is about 7 years old now. About two years ago it broke down and I paid £120 for the BOSCH engineer to come out and fix it. It also provided cover for 12 months. Last May I let it lapse. The Dishwasher has started playing up again. I can only run it in eco mode and sometimes the bottom or top spinners do not work (same problem as last time).

Anyway I've had a letter through this week £65 for the cover if I pay by DD or £75 if I pay CC. I don't know whether I am throwing good money at a machine that is past it or whether I should keep fixing it.

Should I put the money towards a new one when this one breaks completely or pay to have it covered for another 12 months.

I asked the engineer when he came to visit about the life expectancy of BOSCH machines and was told 8-10 years. We are approaching that now.

Would appreciate some advice from people

Thanks

Jo

  • You wouldn't be covered for this repair if you took out the policy now as its already broken.

This is how the cover works. I did not contact them last time until it was broken.

You are covered from the moment you take out the cover (checked the small print). If necessary I can take out the cover and call them a week or two later to come and fix it. I still washes dishes so I can use it - it is just not as effective

I had a similar cover with my siemens dishwasher (same parent company as Bosch?). I rang up to enquire about a price for a circuit board, and the insurance and repair cover for the year was cheaper than buying the board and paying for the repair.

If it's the same policy as mine, then you can only first take it out when it's less than 5 years old, but then continue it for life. The second year is much cheaper than the first, if you pay by dd.

edit: Just remembered, when I took out my insurance, the dishwasher was less than 5 years old (just!), and I was told that the policy covered a completely new, similar appliance if the repair wasn't economical, or possible. Might be worth checking the small print on your poilcy for this?

If it's the same fault you may still be covered under a guarantee on the last repair that was carried out, irrespective of whether you have insurance at present.
