  • What is required is---

2 Leadlock fittings-one for each side of the lead pipe---- £14.00
    12 inches of 15mm.copper pipe
    £ 1.00
    1 new stopcock
    £4.00
and a plumber who is at least competant.

Should take no more than half an hour for a competant plumber.

Contact him and say that your uncle who is an Income Tax inspector would like a word because cash payments without receipts can imply the intention of pocketing undeclared taxable income.

    Totall agree with above
i have been plumbing for about 19 years he should have done the above in the first place,
He sounds like a cowboy that is charging you way to much.
  • Hi

Can't tell from the photo but either two 1/2"x 15mm male iron x copper or 3/4" M/I x C. Couple of red fibre washers and a new stopcock with 15mm tube . I think it would be safe to assume there would be enough slack on the lead pipe to snake it out of the way to allow for the extra few inches it will 'grow'.I would check the pipe first to see if it was a bit suspect and might break up (if I were doing the job)
Would cost less than a tenner for those few bits;)

Andy .. How did you deal with that photo? Edit ..OH just showed me! I'll have to get her to go through it veerrryyy slooooowwwllyy.

PS . I would agree he's doing a good impression of a 'large phone book' plumber. (you know the one)

    pics should be,

For the money paid it should have been 2 new leadloocks and a new stoptap

He has charged you for fitting another used stoptap?

If he was to come back im sure with a little loctite he should be able to seal the joining face

Thanks for sorting the photo andyhop

He quoted me £100 to repair & £160 to repace the stopcock,I now realise the same job would have been done,it is still slowly dripping.
I now have the option of geting copper pipe fitted(he said he would do it for £140 instead of £200) or continue to empty the plastic tub under the stopcock.
I certainly wouldnt trust this guy again.
Would you have any idea how much roughly it would cost to get a new stopcock & copper pipe fitted from a proper plumber.

    Thanks again

As long as there is a external stop tap that will turn the water of to the property then based on prices where i live i would charge approx 2hrs labour £80, material would be no more than £25

  • like corgi guy i am a competent & my business is based on a good name & reputation , i cannot seem to access your pictures , it is for a decent tradesman to advise , it sounds like a pretty standard situation , lead pipe is always better replaced as the first option but if you just wish a repair for now fittings are readily available to use second hand parts is unprofessional & unaceptable , what part of the country

    Thanks creditcritter

    I am in Walthamstow,East London
I am not sure how to get the pictures to post, but another poster kindly sorted it & you can now see it on the trail.

the plumber said he would have to cut about 14 inches of pipe & replace with copper pipe,(at £200,then came down to £140)but he only gave me this option after he had done the repair with the old stopcock & charged £160.00 & I called him back because it was still leaking.
Which would mean £300 in total to fix the leaking stopcock!!
  • How good is the water flow/pressure in your property - just wonder if its worth getting a couple of decent quotes to fully replace the lead out to the road with the blue MDPE pipe and fittings and have done with it once and for all ?

Not sure quite how much this costs though.

Hes just reused an old stopcock or bits of it. This may be because he saw it as a quick fix option and couldnt be bothered doing it properly. I'd Have been happy to do it properly for £140 :)

    Thanks pssst

I have learned a lot from this experience & all the help from mse.
I still have the plastic tub collecting the leak, after paying out £160 to "honest Dave the plumber" for the replacement refurbished stopcock.

I will not have him back, but I guess I will need to have a proper job done with a bona fide plumber at some stage soon

    thanks again
