 hi, i have just been going over the bill with my dh and i we have realized we are using 30 units of gas per day. we dont live in a big house, a normal 3 bed semi. we only use the gas for our heating, and that gets turned off in the evenings. we keep the thermastat at a reasonable level and still seem to be using silly amounts of units! i need to turn the heating on as i'm a childminder and cant have the house too cold for children. has any one got any gas saving tips wo could use as we are facing another £900 bill for the next quater that were not sure we can afford it
its a rented house and the landlord wont make any insulation changes (wich it despratly needs) or any other changes. please some one tell me there is something we can do.

please some one help

What do you mean by 30 units?

30 meter units seems very high. 30kwh seems low.

Without stating what units your meter registers (imperial or metric) it's meaningless!

Must be metric --> 30 x 11 = 330kwh approx. That's horrendous! We have a poorly insulated (Victorian) house on three floors and use 150kwh a day max, but averaging 110kwh this winter winter. That's 10 of your metric meter units.

I think we're generous with the heating, someone is home most of the day and that's hot water for six. We also cook by gas. I do turn thermostat down where possible, but apart from that, probably use more than most. Could you have a gas leak? Do you have loads of radiators and an inefficient boiler? A lot of gas fires?

To read a digital type meter, only use the white figures. Ignore any numbers in red or after a decimal point.
If your gas meter has a standard numeric display with six digits, simply read off the first four digits for your reading.

  • Can you turn your gas off at a shut off lever near the meter?
Try shutting it off and then go round to the neighbours! I lived in a flat once and our electricity bill was huge. we would go round and unplug everything but the fridge and read the meter before work and again when we got in weread the meter again and it was wizzing round. It turned out that the flat upstairs had been connected to our supply.

Also how would your landlord know if you put loft insulation in the loft? Most landlords wouldn't check there and if they found their property had been insulated at no cost or inconvenience to them why would they complain?
Did you know if you receive any benefits you can get it done for free?
