i use mint on an old laptop. the laptop is a few years old and doesnt have a HDD but i can run mint off a usb stick and it works ok, wireless connects to my router ok. Only thing it wont do is remember my settings each time i reboot. But mint itself is easy to use.0

Depends what you want it for and what spec the PC is you are installing onto.
My personal favourite due to ease of use and ease of installation is Ubuntu.
Try the Live CD (bootable CD that will let you try it without installing) first to see if you like it.LBM : March 2008

I prefer Mandriva.
But as said, there isn't really a best. Just sometimes a particular distro will suit more what you want to do with it, the machine it will go on and your experience level with the OS.

Debian 5.0 'Lenny', which was issued on 14 February 2009. Many other distros are based on Debian, and I find it easy to install, and fast and easy to use. Thoroughly tested, extremely stable, and bang up to date.0

I have that on my Acer Aspire one - You can download programs, you just need to activate advanced mode. (Just Search google for Linpus Lite Advanced - It'll come up with loads of links - I'm pretty sure you'll find the answer on this site in the Grabbit section when Asda were selling the aspire for £150)
What PC do you have? - If it's also an Aspire, then installing other versions of linux is a pain. Lot's of issues with wi-fi drivers. The only one I've got working fully was Ubuntu and to be honest it didn't make it any better than Linpus and took a lot of messing around.
To edit photos - once you've got advanced mode, download Gimp - fantastic peice of software.LBM : March 2008

I believe to install programs, you need to do the following:
1. press alt+f2 or go to Files->My Documents to open the File Manager and then go to File->Terminal.
2. In the terminal type: xfce-setting-show
3. Click Desktop, then go to Behaviour tab
4. Enable "Show desktop menu on right click"
5. Right clicking on the desktop will now give you more options.
6. Click System-> Add/Remove Software
7. Give your password
You will see the available software and can choose to install anything that is on that list. You must be connected to the Internet, so it can download the programs and install them for you. From this program you can also update ALL your programs at once.
Copied from here
I've never used linpus before but even though its rather restricted the good thing about linux is the massive support base. If you want to do something odds arfe someones already done it.0 -
