What should I do with extra money?

Options
I am a uni student, 3rd year, saving for deposit for house, therefore dont want anymore money locked away for years (already got £6k coming out in 2011 I think)!

Atm I currently have a maxed out ISA for 08/09, and have just received a surprise Child Bonus Bond of just over £500. What Im planning on doing is moving my current ISA fund at the start of April to the top fixed rate ISA (transfer not withdraw and put in) at the time (as I have suffered this year, started at 6.5% and now is barely touching 2% I think  ) and then maxing out £3600 on top of the current fund.

This would not go over the uaranteed £50k limit.

Is this the best plan available to me? I have already applied for that Fixed 6% RegSaver from Barclays but got rejected due to not meeting Criteria

Thanks, and sorry for the essay
