Same email account on two different computers???

  • Assuming that you're using the same internet router, then you can set it up as follows :

    1. Create a network, this is also useful for accessing files on one or other computers.

    2. Move your Outlook Express file to a different location than the default. I have mine located on a different partition (along with all my other personal files) so if I have to reimage or restore it doesn't affect them. I tend to use my desktop as the main storgae area.

    3. With the desktop running change the file location in Outlook Express on the laptop to the location where it is stored on the laptop. This means wherever you open the file it will have all the messages every time.

    4. Set up your desktop to wake up to a ping from your laptop. There are lots of free programs on the net that you can use to ping. This is quite a nice one which also explains how it works, but there are plenty of others, just google "Wake on Lan"

    5. This enables you to wake up your desktop from your laptop, and access your network, and therefore your email file.

    6. The only issue with this is that it leaves your desktop running, but if you use the free Logmein you can then log in and power it off. This is also a nice piece of software to access other stuff on your desktop, as you can run software thats on your desktop from your laptop.

    This works well for me.

    Sweeping statement.
"IMAP keeps all emails on the server until you erase them."
Maybe most people may find this just too much hassle.

How is that too much hassle?

When I erase an email from my Mac, it gets erased from Gmail.

I would think erasing them all once they're downloaded with POP would be a bit more of a hassle if you were trying to use your email on more than one device. Or if you didn't erase the all with POP, you'd have to sign into your webmail every so often and clean it all out.

    Less work = less hassle.

How are you going to check them on two devices if checking them on one erases them all?

I just use Gmail web interface because the network I spend half my time in blocks just about every port, meaning no POP or IMAP for me :(
Ubuntu is an ancient African word, meaning: 'I can't configure Debian'.
