Cleaning white sparkly gravel?

Not sure if this is the correct boards for this query so, please feel free to move it along.

Situ. A couple of summers ago, I gravelled my front (concrete) garden with sparkly white gravel. Since then, we we all know, the weather has been carp and my lovely white stuff now looks green/grey and well, pretty grim. It's only a smallish area, about 10ftx6ft.

Does anyone know of a cheap and effective way of restoring its prettiness? Don't really want to have to shovel it all up, the concrete underneath is far more hideous than the grubby gravel!

I had heard that a mix of bleach and water in a watering can can have some effect but doesn't shift the green stuff.

All suggestions welcome. Thanks very much! :D

  • I use Tesco's cheap thin bleach to keep the moss off my block paving - it might be worth trying some on a small area.

Thanks for that Herr Schmitt. Do you use the bleach neat or diluted?

  • Neat, just make sure it is the "thin" bleach. Good Luck!
  • Was it expensive? I would buy a bit more to top it up if affordable.

This probably won't help you but we have one of those pebble pond fountain features and after several years the stone had got really grotty and covered with lichen and mould. We removed the stones and soaked them overnight in a diluted bleach solution and then rinsed them in clean water. They came up sparkling clean. I know you can't remove your gravel but if you wait until it rains and then gave them a bleach wash it might help to clean them up. However, for something that isn't really designed to be moved, I'm not sure there is a mlore effective solution.
