car inurance and death of policy holder

Options
does anyone know whether the car is still insured and if not who would be the legal owner of the car during administration period of the will (executors or beneficiaries),as the car would need to be re-insured by that party. thanks

  • When a person dies, the policy for their car automatically passes to the executor of their will. It's like when a company goes into liquidation; the receiver takes control of the assets just as an executor takes over responsibility for the estate.

Most UK insurers will transfer a policy into the name of "the executors for the estate of...." or something like that. This is regardless of whether we are talking about home or motor insurance.

The executor can nominate someone to take control of the car and once again, most insurers will simply insure that person to drive the car to their home and store it there. The idea is that someone should protect the asset, not drive it from Fishguard to Felixstowe, so they will be expected to use it for emergency purposes only, not driving to and from work.

In short, speak to the Executor.
In the beginning, the universe was created. This made a lot of people very angry and was widely regarded as a bad move.
