I used to work for British Gas years ago and regularly dealt with letters addressed to the chairman or the chief exec, and I was only on the basic customer service front line.

If British Gas's Chief Execs don't deal with the issues raised with them personally, that accounts for the terrible reputation that British Gas has. Maybe if their Chief Exec intervened, their standards would increase.

... and the Chief Exec would have to work a 25-hour day.

    His salary probably warrants it!

You might have answered your own question there. Halifax aren't paying people £5 per month just because they feel generous. They are doing it to attract more customers, hoping that most of them will slip into the red now and again and end up paying more in overdraft charges than they receive from the reward. If they can see from your credit score than you never, ever, go overdrawn then they might have decided it's not worth giving you an account because you won't be profitable for them.

You may have it right here. I applied for Reward Account and have been declined - I specified on the application I did not want an overdraft. Obviously they see no potential profit in it for them.
