                    Hi peeps,
I'm hoping to give a pc to a friend, who for various reasons doesn't have a phone line. Could she use this broadband dongle(see link) while using Ubuntu os on it or XP at a pinch.
The motherboard is: http://www.giga-byte.co.uk/Products/Motherboard/Products_Spec.aspx?ProductID=1416
This is the dongle. http://www.carphonewarehouse.com/broadband/mobile-broadband/buy/TMOBILEUSB-MODEMSTICK-MB5P8-FCONS
At the moment the pc works on line with a NETGEAR FA311 PCI network card.
Thanks for any advice.

Your biggest concern is not so much as whether the mobo can handle it but as to whether or not you can get a Linux driver for the dongle. You could just about run XP on assuming that you maxed out the RAM, and certainly few problems with ubuntu
You don't say how much RAM you've got to put in but if it's only 512Mb, then stick with the ubuntu option. It may help if you gave us the USB dongle model.0 -
It has two x 512Mb. The dongle looks an own brand type, so it may take some time fishing out the info unfortunately.Peel back your baby's eyelid to find no nationality or religious identity mark there. You may also have a problem with the USB ports not being USB2.
I've run into this before and it's not a major problem, as PCI USB2 cards aren't expensive now, and last time I tried it the drivers for the card were already in the Linux (Ubuntu Feisty) kernel.
If you can get CPW to tell you the chipset that the dongle is based on it should be relatively easy to find out whether it's supported in Ubuntu.0 -
Own brands are invariably made by some one else, it'll probably be a Huawei E160, in which case you'll need to follow the instructions here to get it to work

Ubuntu detects most 3g dongles it's got basic drivers already installed, i've used my '3' dongle on a clean install a few times.
you probably won't see it do anything, but the first time it will pop up and ask you what network you want to connect to. Laters
